
Most powerful kingdoms in Uganda. Long long before the arrival of European colonialists, there was nothing like a Uganda but a couple of kingdoms and chiefdoms. These disintegrated or ceased existing after the European took over the land and declared Uganda a British Protectorate in 1894.
With the declaration of independence in 1962, abolition of kingdoms by Obote in 1966, some ceased existing while others were restored. Below we present to you the most powerful kingdoms in Uganda:-
- Rwenzururu Kingdom

This kingdom is located in the Rwenzori Mountains and has its capital in Kasese district in western Uganda. It lies on the border between Uganda and the DRC.
Apparently it seceded from Tooro Kingdom in 1962 but attained official autonomy in 1982. However, to be certified as a cultural entity was 2008. The predominant tribes are the Bakonzo and Bamba. It occupies the districts of Kasese, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo. Currently, they are led by the Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere.
The kingdom came under the headlines in 2016 when the kingdom local guards clashed with government forces leading to the death of hundreds of people especially the locals. Omusinga Mumbere was even jailed and exiled from the area for a couple of years.
- Bunyoro Kingdom

Apparently this is the mother of all kingdoms in Uganda. Before there was the nation of Uganda or any other kingdom, Bunyoro was around and was known as Bunyoro Kitara Empire. Initially it was ruled by the mythical Bachwezi. This empire extended as far as Tanzania and into Rwanda.
But with time, the empire disintegrated and a lot of kingdoms broke off it such as Buganda, Ankore, Tooro among others. Currently, the kingdom consists of the districts of Buliisa, Hoima, Kibaale, Kakumiro, Kagadi, Kiryandongo, and Masindi and is ruled by an Omukama.
This kingdom is located in western Uganda and the capital is Hoima. Omukama Solomon Gafabusa is the current ruler. With time the kingdom lost it’s significance and is no longer as strong as it was before.
- Busoga Kingdom

Located in Eastern Uganda, Busoga kingdom has its capital in Bugembe. They are rules by a Kyabazinga and the current is known as William Gabula Nadiope. Iganga, Bugiri, Mayuge, Jinja, Luuka, Bugweri, Buyende, Kaliro Namutumba and Kamuli are some of the districts that make up this kingdom.
Well Busoga kingdom broke off Buganda Kingdom and the two have a lot in common. Farming and fishing are the main economic activities.
- Tooro Kingdom

Tooro Kingdom sits in number two on this list. The kingdom is another of those that broke off Bunyoro Kingdom. In fact the Batooro and Banyoro have so much in common that it might be difficult for one to differentiate them.
They are also ruled by an Omukama and the current t ruler is Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi Mpuuga IV. Some of the districts that make up this kingdom are Bundibugyo, Kabarole, Kasese, Kitagwenda, Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, Kamwenge, Ntoroko and Bunyangabu.
The capital is in Fort Portal and Rutooro is the main language. Batooro is the major tribe although there are some minorities such as Babwisi and Bakonzo.
- Buganda Kingdom

This without is the largest and most powerful kingdom in Uganda. Located in the central part of the country, it’s ruled by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II. The capital is in Kampala which is also the capital city of Uganda.
Buganda is made up by the districts of “Kampala, Mpigi, Wakiso, Butambala, Gomba, Mukono, Buvuma, Buikwe, Kalangala, Masaka, Kalungu, Lwengo, Mubende, Mityana, Nakasongola, Nakaseke, Kyankwanzi, Kiboga, Rakai, Lyantonde.”
Agriculture and trade are the major economic activities. The Baganda are the most influential people in the country of Uganda thus the reason they rank high on this list of the most powerful kingdoms in Uganda.
